Olfactory Architect

Hopefully you nabbed a copy of Coilhouse's fourth issue before it sold out! As their enigma of a mission states, "Coilhouse is a love letter to alternative culture written in an era when alternative culture no longer exists." This issue features photography by AC Berkheiser with an article about sensory artist Christopher Brosius of CB I Hate Perfume. For the unfortunate noses who haven't been transformed by his gallery—pack your bags, come to Williamsburg, and arrive scent-naked. An arsenal of tiny bottles in my medicine cabinet serves as a testament to my opinion of his gifts.

From the cocoon

I've just rediscovered colored pencils after a decade of ignoring their lovely simplicity. I'm part of an artist collective in very talented company of Dunya Steyns, Amy Armour, Sofia Vlasaki, Elysa Voshell, and Lina Hakim: each month we send an object of inspiration to one another. June's was a box containing a dried cocoon wrapped in a sweet little vintage hanky. Quick sketch led to quick sketch…

Printed Matter

We were just on press for a few jobs which turned out so nicely. One of these identities you've seen before, the other is fairly fresh. Enjoy!

New York Photo Festival

A collection of ten polaroids by AC Berkheiser will be on display at NYPH 09 from May 13–17. We Are All Photographers Now, is curated by William A. Ewing, Director of the Musée de l'Elysée, Lausanne, and examines the degree to which technology blurs the line between amatuer and professional photographer. He notes: "Everything is changing…how we take photographs, manipulate them, share them, store them—even how we pose for them. Our tools are mutating quickly, promising ever faster, clearer, brighter and cheaper pictures. Meanwhile telephones become cameras, desktop printers morph into mini-printing labs, and high-definition screens threaten to dislodge the venerable photographic print from gallery walls. And the eyes of the whole world are only a click away from the computer keyboard." Ouch.

Stop by to see our doomed fate or our irrevocable promise—depending on which team you're snapping for.

FIRST DANCE

Spring is in the air here in New York, and that means it's a very busy time at North Sea. One of this week's projects has been a particular joy and we'd like to share a preview of the budding identity that's in the works. I Do Dances is the latest endeavor of trainer, dancer, and performance artist Kathleen Hahn. She infuses dance-lesson nerves with a casual and campy edge. Kathleen phrases it best: "What a perfect opportunity to turn what could potentially be an awkward, uncomfortable moment into an outrageously fun bonding exerience that guests will be talking about for years."

Fethr Collaboration

A recent North Sea collaboration with fledgling New York dressmakers Fethr, this large-format graphic collage is acting as the key environmental for their debut this winter. The spring line is absolutely divine and we can’t wait to see them take off!

Niagara Rises

I wrapped up this poster last weekend for Niagara Rises, a four-part lecture series on environmental issues surrounding the North American landmark. This little gem is a water-based screenprint over offset litho. Click on the thumbnail if you want to check it out. I’ll throw in a plug for my on-site photo work from the falls, taken with my trusty Holga on 120mm film.

Film. Mmmm.

The Cult of Gocco

2008: the death of not only some of my favorite photographic films, but also that of a little Japanese wonder known as Print Gocco. Somehow the gods find out what crafty indulgences win me over and then see if my mortal guile can survive without them. Well, I’ve stocked the craft shelter with enough bulbs, screens, and ink to survive the bomb. This is the first print I made with my Gocco, a tribute to my brother. As a kid, he used to think the TV announcer was saying, “Coming soon to a feaneater near you.” I thought it would be best glorified with metallic gold ink on cream.

Hhhhot Wheels

I used to ride past this old truck in North Carolina on my way to school every day that looked just like this one. To say that I coveted its curves and singularity is a pastel way to describe how hhhhot I thought it was. Too bad it was rusted and undriveable, doomed to live up on blocks in a redneck’s yard. When I saw this one in Brooklyn a week ago, it reminded me of that careful little relic from times when people cared a little more about design, a little less about technology.

Book Preview

I’ll be adding several books to the design section of this site once it's live. In the meantime, here’s a preview of some of the hardcovers I've designed, inside and out. More soon!

Please don't go away

By now, the news that Polaroid is ripping my beloved 600 film from the center of my heart is as old as the crowd at the Center for Book Arts lecture I attended Friday. Yes, there are pending rumors about third party pick-ups, but I blame its death on the laziness of digital. Are people just not making things anymore? Come on, folks. Get off the internet and create tangibility. I’m afraid this relic will go in the 2008 time capsule with my Print Gocco. So sad.

These shots are from the Thunderbird American Indian Pow-wow in New York this summer. They’re taken with my SX-70 Alpha I.

See more of my Polaroid SX-70 set on Flickr.
